What grapes are used in Burgundy wine?

Red Burgundy is made from Pinot Noir and white Burgundy from Chardonnay. Beaujolais, in the south, is made from Gamay, and Aligoté is a lesser-known white grape.

What is the difference between Premier Cru and Grand Cru Burgundy?

Grand Cru is the top classification, given to around 2% of Burgundy's vineyards. Premier Cru vineyards are the next level and offer outstanding quality, usually at lower prices than Grand Cru.

Is Chablis a Burgundy wine?

Yes. Chablis is the northernmost district of Burgundy and makes crisp, mineral wines from Chardonnay.

About Burgundy Wine

Burgundy (Bourgogne) in eastern France is the spiritual home of Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. Centuries of monks and growers mapped its vineyards plot by plot, and its wines are classified by vineyard rather than producer, making Burgundy the classic expression of terroir.

Burgundy Regions and Classifications

The Côte de Nuits is famous for red Pinot Noir from villages like Gevrey-Chambertin and Vosne-Romanée, while the Côte de Beaune is home to great white Burgundy from Meursault and Puligny-Montrachet. Chablis in the north produces crisp Chardonnay, and the Côte Chalonnaise and Mâconnais offer excellent value. Wines rise from regional Bourgogne to village, Premier Cru and Grand Cru.
