The 2020 Penfolds Bin 600 California Cabernet Sauvignon Shiraz is a remarkable blend of two of the world’s most iconic grape varieties, crafted from the challenging yet rewarding Napa Valley and Paso Robles regions. This vintage was shaped by a warm, dry winter, followed by mild spring conditions that allowed for an early start to the growing season. The summer brought cool mornings and warm days, setting the stage for a vintage marked by high-quality, concentrated grapes. Despite the challenges posed by COVID restrictions and wildfires, the winemakers at Penfolds leveraged small yields to produce a wine of exceptional quality and intensity.
This wine is composed of 68% Cabernet Sauvignon and 32% Shiraz, resulting in a beautiful core of red, blue, and black fruits. On the nose, you'll find aromas of summer berry pudding with anglaise, rhubarb tart, apple and cinnamon strudel, and Morello cherries. The Shiraz plays a pivotal role in the mid-palate, adding generosity and structure to the Cabernet Sauvignon. The fine, talc-like tannins create a smooth texture, while the soft acidity ensures that the wine remains beautifully balanced. At once concentrated yet fresh, this is a wine that is approachable now, but with the promise of further complexity as it ages.
With 97 points from Andrew Caillard MW and 96 points from Ken Gargett, alongside 95 points from esteemed critics such as Dave Brookes, Huon Hooke, and James Suckling, this wine is widely regarded as one of the best in its category. It represents the perfect harmony of Napa Valley’s world-class Cabernet Sauvignon and Paso Robles’ expressive Shiraz, showcasing both power and finesse.
Pair this stunning wine with grilled lamb chops, chargrilled steak, or roasted pork with a fruit compote. Its richness and depth also make it a great match for creamy cheeses like Brie or aged Gouda.
