The Penfolds St Henri Shiraz 2017 adheres to its heritage style by eschewing new oak and focusing on purity of fruit. The blend is 97% Shiraz and ~3% Cabernet Sauvignon, matured in large, seasoned vats (circa 1,460 L, over 50 years old), resulting in minimal oak influence.
Visually, the wine shows deep plum-red hues. Aromatically, it offers intense elderberry, mulberry and bramble notes, layered with liquorice, mocha, roasted walnut, and subtle savoury herbs such as oregano, thyme and lavender.
On the palate, it is plush and seamless, with refined, polished tannins. Flavours of black olive, coffee and mocha interplay with succulent fruit acidity (e.g. pomegranate, cranberry, quince) and balanced sweetness. The medium-to full body is well structured, and the finish is clean, dry and long.
TASTING NOTE
Colour: deep garnet-purple hue with youthful brightness.
Palate: Medium to full-bodied, bursting with layers of blackberry, plum, and blackcurrant, supported by silky yet structured tannins and lively acidity. Subtle hints of dark chocolate, spice, cedar, and vanilla oak add complexity and depth.
Finish: long, elegant, and refined, leaving lingering impressions of dark fruit, gentle spice, and a mineral edge.
