Ponui Island – population of nine, the odd boy scout camp, and home to New Zealand's only feral donkey breed, the Ponui Donkey! It's also home to grapes for the world-famous (on Waiheke) Man O' War Exiled Pinot Gris.

Located south-east of Waiheke Island in Auckland's Hauraki Gulf, this is where the Man O' War crew have been sourcing fruit for their most prized Exiled Pinot Gris for many years now — this cult-followed wine draws on Ponui Island's Paradise vineyard alongside Waiheke's Beast, Cliffs, Lone Kauri and Gorse Laneway vineyards, hand-picked between February and March.

The 2025 vintage is a lush, off-dry style balancing vibrant acidity with delicate sweetness.

Nose: Bright and lifted, with white nectarine, green apple, elderflower and lime zest, plus a distinctive wet stone and sea breeze character.

Palate: Juicy and mouth-filling, with mandarin peel, honeysuckle and stone fruit — all the usual Gris flavours of pear and peach, but with a heap of honeysuckle thrown in. The Man O' War crew have previously described Exiled as bordering on a tiki drink!

Finish: Refreshing, with a touch of subtle natural carbonation.
