This bottle of Caol Ila is apart of Diageo's 2022 Distillers Edition. The idea behind The Distillers Edition is to provide an alternative expression of each whisky; to add richness, complexity and interest in the form of a different ‘take’ on that whisky’s attributes. There are seven distinctive Distillers Edition expressions (including Lagavulin, Oban, Talisker, Caol Ila, Dalwhinnie, and more), the remarkable and complex Distillers Edition process, and the people who make it. Pronounced “Cull Eela." It’s the Gaelic name for the Sound of Islay, which separates the island from Jura. For some, the distillery’s pronunciation is as remote as its location, sitting as it does on the rugged eastern coast, where it has remained hidden from view since 1846. However you say it, the fine, smoky whisky produced by generations of islanders is worth exploring.

This Caol Ila, in which the rich texture and sweetness introduced by the sweet Moscatel seasoned casks smoothly complement and add depth to the smoky clean character of the regular release. Another unusual cask finish here. Secondary maturation takes place in American oak casks that previously held sweet moscatel wine. This brings layers of floral, heady fruitiness to the coastal smokiness of Caol Ila. It’s a match made in heaven.

On the nose there are waves of coastal peat, with damp ashes, and subtle hints of dried apricot. The palate leads with full flavoured smoke and has a sweeter edge tending more towards barbecue smoke, with some pepper and cinnamon alongside. The finish is lovely and smoky.
