Churchill drank Pol Roger – lots of it. Its cépage has never been released but it is believed to be over 60 per cent pinot noir. 2013 was a good vintage, the acidity a highlight. The Cuvee Sir Winston Churchill, Champagne Pol Roger's Prestige Cuvee, was created in homage to Sir Winston Churchill (he was rumoured to have consumed 42,000 bottles of Pol Roger during his lifetime!) mindful of the qualities that he preferred in his champagne: robustness, a full-bodied character and relative maturity. The exact blend is a closely guarded family secret but it is undeniable that the composition would meet the approval of the man to whom it is dedicated.
