A supreme Chardonnay from Waipara legends, Pegasus Bay. The 'Virtuoso' is only made in the most exceptional vintages, about every three years. The sheer quality of this wine comes from the family's 30+ year old vines, many of which are still on their original rootstock. Pegasus employs a non-intervention 'Burgundian' approach of fermenting with indigenous yeast in large-format French oak, followed by long lees aging and partial malolactic fermentation that naturally occurs the following summer.
Shimmering bright lemon in colour, the nose is multifaceted, fruit driven yet intriguingly savoury. Impressions of grapefruit, grilled pineapple, and melon, nestled on an underlay of smoky bacon, buttered popcorn, and pie crust, fused with hazelnuts, creamy caramel, and a puff of gunpowder. In the mouth it is vibrant and energised, with sophisticated concentration and exhilarating acidity combining to create a formidable tension. Strapping, yet oozing with finesse, it accelerates towards a long, racy finish.
