Bin 150 Marananga Shiraz 2018 is a sub-regional expression that is unmistakably Penfolds in character. Conceived from the ancient soils of Marananga, which lie very close to the centre of the Barossa Valley floor – slightly to the North West, where warm dry conditions and rich red soil provide the backbone to some of the region’s best-known wines. The Bin 150 2018 release delivers a contemporary shiraz alternative, framed by a mix of oaks; French and American, old and new – crafted in accordance with the traditional Penfolds method.
Colour
Deep, dark red.
Nose
A captivating aromatic lift introduces a vibrant medley of African and Middle Eastern spices – hints of cumin and dried fennel mingle with a tangy dill-pickle brine character. While the typical Marananga blueberry and juniper tones are more subdued, a host of other Shiraz nuances rise to the fore. Notes of freshly baked pound cake and a cumquat-apricot strudel offer a playful, fruit-driven sweetness balanced by warm, comforting accents. Subtle oak influence reveals itself only on close inspection, with whispers of nutmeg, ginger, and toasted nuttiness.
Palate
A rich, almost coulis-like blend of boysenberry and mulberry floods the palate, laced with hints of cola and creamy soda. Firm yet refined tannins carry a fine, raspberry-seed texture, lending depth and tension. The oak is present but restrained—contributing structure without dominating the flavour profile. The finish reveals a savoury, ferrous note reminiscent of ironstone or haemoglobin, adding an earthy complexity to this layered and compelling Shiraz.
