Craggy Range Sophia 2024 is an elegant and age-worthy Bordeaux-style red blend from Gimblett Gravels, Hawke’s Bay, predominantly crafted from Merlot, complemented by Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon.

Produced at Craggy Range’s Giants Estate Winery, Sophia represents the estate’s pursuit of elegance, depth and longevity. With Merlot vines now over 25 years old, individual vineyard blocks bring together aromatic complexity, plush fruit and refined structure.

The 2024 vintage combines ripe, concentrated fruit with an elevated perfume and beautifully integrated tannins. Rich and generous while retaining freshness and balance, it is a sophisticated New Zealand red with the structure and depth to develop gracefully with extended cellaring.

Tasting Notes

• Appearance: Deep ruby to crimson with excellent concentration.
• Nose: Highly perfumed and expressive, showing ripe dark plum, blackberry and black cherry alongside floral notes, subtle spice, cedar and savoury complexity.
• Palate: Rich and layered with plush Merlot fruit at its core. Dark berries and ripe plum are complemented by fine savoury notes and beautifully integrated oak.
• Texture: Silky and polished, with fine-grained tannins providing structure without overwhelming the fruit.
• Finish: Long, elegant and persistent, with dark fruit, spice and refined tannins lingering on the finish.
• Cellaring: Beautifully composed for drinking after appropriate decanting in its youth, with excellent potential for extended bottle ageing.
