Nikka was founded in 1934 by Masataka Taketsuru, known as the father of Japanese whisky, who learned whisky making in Scotland. Nikka operates two distilleries: Yoichi in Hokkaido, known for robust, coal-fired pot still malts, and Miyagikyo near Sendai, known for softer, fruitier spirit and its rare Coffey stills.
