Mojito Recipe: How to Make a Classic Mojito

October 14, 2026WhiskeyOnline NZ

The Mojito is Cuba's famous highball: crisp white rum, fresh mint, lime and a splash of soda. It is light, refreshing and perfect for a New Zealand summer.

Classic Mojito Recipe

Ingredients (serves 1)

  • 50ml white rum
  • 25ml fresh lime juice (about half a lime)
  • 2 tsp caster sugar or 15ml sugar syrup
  • 8–10 fresh mint leaves
  • Soda water, to top
  • Crushed ice

Method

  1. Gently press the mint leaves with the sugar and lime juice in a highball glass. Don't shred the mint, or it will turn bitter.
  2. Fill the glass with crushed ice and pour in the rum.
  3. Stir well to mix and chill.
  4. Top with soda water and garnish with a mint sprig and lime wedge.

Tip: Slap the mint sprig between your hands before garnishing to release its aroma.

Which Rum Is Best for a Mojito?

A light white rum is traditional. Bacardi Superior and Havana Club 3 Year Old are both excellent choices. Explore more in our rum collection or the Havana Club range.

FAQs

What rum goes in a Mojito?

White rum, such as Bacardi Superior or Havana Club 3 Year Old.

Should I use crushed or cubed ice?

Crushed ice is traditional and chills the drink quickly, but cubed ice works if that is all you have.

Can I make a jug of Mojitos?

Yes. Multiply the recipe, muddle the mint, sugar and lime in a jug, add rum and ice, then top with soda just before serving.
