What Is Zinfandel?
Zinfandel is a red grape famous for rich, fruit-forward wines with blackberry, raspberry jam, black pepper and sweet spice. It is the same grape as Italy's Primitivo, and both trace their roots to Croatia, where it is known as Crljenak Kastelanski.
California Zinfandel
Zinfandel is California's signature grape. Old Vine Zinfandel comes from vines often more than 50 years old in regions such as Lodi, Sonoma and Paso Robles, giving concentrated, smooth and generous reds that are perfect with barbecue.
Italian Primitivo
In Puglia, the heel of southern Italy, the grape is called Primitivo because it ripens early. Primitivo di Manduria and Salento Primitivo are warm, plush and full of dark cherry, plum and chocolate. Giordano's Primitivo wines have won top awards from Luca Maroni.
