What is Amaro
Amaro means bitter in Italian. It is a herbal liqueur made by infusing a spirit or wine with roots, herbs, bark, citrus peel and spices, then sweetening and ageing it. Every Amaro has its own secret recipe, often handed down for more than a century. The result is a bittersweet drink that is traditionally enjoyed after dinner to help digestion, known in Italy as a digestivo.
Popular Amaro Styles
Amaro ranges from light and sweet to intensely bitter. Amaro Montenegro is light, floral and gently sweet, a great first Amaro. Averna is rich and smooth, with notes of caramel, orange and liquorice. Ramazzotti and Amaro Lucano are rounded and balanced, with spice and citrus. Cynar is made with artichoke and is lower in alcohol, great with soda. Fernet Branca is the most bitter and herbal of all, with strong mint and menthol, and is loved by bartenders around the world.
How to Drink Amaro
The classic way to drink Amaro is neat or over ice after a meal. It is also great topped with soda water or tonic and a slice of orange, or in an Amaro Spritz with prosecco. Bartenders use Amaro in cocktails such as the Black Manhattan, Paper Plane and Hanky Panky, or in place of Campari in a Negroni.
