What is Ouzo
Ouzo is the national drink of Greece, a clear spirit flavoured with anise and other herbs and spices such as fennel and coriander. It is usually bottled at around 37.5 to 40% ABV and has a smooth, sweet liquorice flavour. Ouzo 12 is one of the best known brands, while Ouzo 7, Olympus and Metaxa Ouzo each offer their own style.
What is Raki
Raki is the national drink of Turkey, made from grapes and twice distilled with aniseed. It is usually stronger than ouzo, at around 45% ABV, with a rich, bold anise character. Yeni Raki is Turkey's most famous raki, and Yeni Raki Ala is a fuller, more intense style.
How to Drink Ouzo and Raki
Both are traditionally served with cold water or ice, which turns the clear spirit milky white as the anise oils come out of solution. Pour the spirit first, then add water to taste, and enjoy slowly with mezze, seafood, grilled meats and feta. In Turkey, raki is often called lion's milk.
